Lady Day ehk Billie Holiday on paljude jazzmuusika armastajate jaoks suurim jazzlaulja üldse. "Lady Sings the Blues" on tema enda poolt kirja pandud elulugu, mis näitab lugejatele maailma, millises see andekas naine pidi omal ajal toime tulema. Sündinud vaid 13-aastasele noorele tüdrukule, pidi ta üles kasvama väga rasketes oludes. Ehkki Sadie (Sarah Julia Harris) ja Clarence Holiday abiellusid mõned aastad hiljem, ütlesid lapse sündides mõlemate perekonnad neist lahti ja jätsid lapsed enese hooleks. Kahjuks ei jäänud Sadie ja Clarence hiljem kokku ning Billie ema oli sunnitud jätma tütre sugulaste hoolde, kes temaga üsna halvasti käitusid. Vaid vanavanaema armastas Billie väga ning vana naise surm oli talle suureks shokiks. Samuti igasugused sündmused, mis kuidagi väikese tüdruku eluga kokku ei peaks sobima (lõputu töötegemine, töö otsimine, vägistamiskatse ning emalt äravõtmine, karistused katolikus hooldusasutuses, call girli amet). Ja ometigi just needsamad tööotsimised viisid välja selleni, et ühel õhtul kui miski muu ei aidanud ning tema tantsuetteaste läbi kukkus, laulis Billie ühe pianisti ettepanekul publiku ees - hiirvaikuses. Sealt saigi alguse tema tähelend, mis küll ei kulgenud otsejoones üles aga tegi ta lõpuks paljude kuulajate lemmikuks.

1915. aastal sündinud Billie pidi ka läbinisti valgetest muusikutest koosneva orkestriga esinedes taluma alandust ning jätkuvalt võitlema kasvõi selle eest, et orkestriga ringi reisides süüa saada, rääkimata hotellitoa üürimisest, kohalikule sherifile silmajäämisest või esinemiskohta sisse pääsemisest. Mõnikord vedas ta muusikutega, kes teda väga hoidsid, isegi kihla, kas vastuvõtja, hotelliomanik või kohalik korrakaitsja tuleb teda solvama ning paraku oli tal enamasti õigus.

Billie esinemiskohad olid tihtipeale sellised, kuhu kogunesid tegusad inimesed, mitmedki neist väga kuulsad. Nii suhtles lauljanna paljude oma aja kuulsustega, kes temast hoolisid ning heameelega koos aega veetsid, isegi kui see tõi kaasa ähvardusi ning solvanguid. Clarke Gable aitas Billie't kui tema sõbranna auto teele jäi, Orson Welles käis Billiega läbi kõikvõimalikud kohad, kus midagi toimus, esinemiskohtades käisid teda kuulamas ning tema muusika järgi tantsimas Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Lana Turner, Mel Tormé, hiina toitu söömas ja juttu puhumas Norman Granz...

Billie satub narkootikumide tõttu ka süsteemi hammasrataste vahele - tõdedes, et seni, kui ta oli "kasutaja", ei tundnud tema vastu keegi huvi. Ent hetkest kui ta püüdis oma sõltuvusest vabaneda ning oli viibinud 3-kuulisel võõrutusravil, hakati teda nii pingsalt jälgima, et sellisest piiramisrõngast polnud enam võimalik pääseda. Juhtum "The United States of America versus Billie Holiday" lõppes lauljatari saatmisega asutusse nimega the Federal Woman's Reformatory, mis asus Aldertonis, Lääne-Virginias.

Kuigi elu loopis Billie Holiday teele palju takistusi, oli ta lõpuni välja unistaja ning veel oma viimastel aastatelgi lootis ta, et tal õnnestub ehk mõni oma unistus teostada. Selleks oli näiteks koht maal, kuhu ta soovis võtta kostile lapsi, kellel lähedased puudusid. Ilmselgelt tundis ta, et mõistab neid hästi, kuna tema enda lapsepõlv oli möödunud väga keerulistes tingimustes. Teiseks unistuseks oli omaenda klubi, kus esitada just nii palju ja sellist muusikat, nagu ta ise soovis.

Kõige suurem väärtus ehk ongi minu jaoks selle raamatu puhul see, et lugu jutustab Billie ise, oma kõnepruugis ning oma vaatenurgast. Kui palju on kõiges tõtt ning kuidas mõned asjad täpselt olid, ei saa me võib-olla kunagi teada, ent kindlasti näeb lugeja maailmakuulsat jazzmuusika ikooni selle raamatu järel veidi teise pilguga.

Tänu sõbrale ja duopartnerile Andy Fite'ile Stockholmis tutvusin ka teise raamatuga, mida päriselt lugeda ei jõua ning väga ei saagi, kuna tegu on omamoodi "päevaraamatuga", kuhu on kokku kogutud nii palju informatsiooni kui võimalik. See on Ken Vail'i kokku pandud "Lady Day's Diary", mis käsitleb lauljanna elu peamiselt aastatel 1937-1959 ning on välja antud aastal 1996, Castle Communications poolt. Fännidele oleks see raamat üsnagi asendamatuks infoallikaks. Sellest raamatust kirjutan postituse lõppu ka nimekirja Lady Day esitatud lauludest.  Terves raamatus on 200 lehekülge ning ilmselt on siia pea kõik salvestussessioonid või kontserdid, kus muusika salvestati, üles märgitud. Laulude hulgas võib olla ka instrumentaale, sest ei jõudnud kõiki kirjeldusi täpselt üle lugeda.

Andy varamust leidsin ka Billie Holiday 10-plaadise kogumiku, kust teen ka mõned kokkuvõtted. Siin on märgitud, et tema esimesed etteasted olid juba 13-aastaselt ning samuti väidetakse, et ta töötas koos oma emaga prostituutidena, mida on raske uskuda, arvestades Billie kirjeldust oma uskliku ja väga põhimõttekindla ema kohta. Arvatakse, et Billie alustas marihuaana ja alkoholiga juba 14-aastaselt, töötades koos jazzmuusikutega ning soovides järgida igati nende elustiili. 

Billie hariduseks võib pidada Louis Armstrongi salvestuste kuulamist, millele lisandus tüdruku loomulik rütmitunne ja sving, mis jättis kohatud muusikutele sügava mulje. Näiteks John Hammond, kes oli oluline muusikaprodutsent, käis Billiet igal võimalusel kuulamas pärast seda, kui oli ta avastanud. Ehkki esimesed katsed saada Billiele võimalus muusikat salvestada luhtusid, õnnestus Hammondil lõpuks aastal 1933 Billie esmakordselt stuudiosse saada, Benny Goodmaniga. 1934. aastal kohtus Holiday ka saksofonist Lester Youngiga, kellega nad jäid suhtlema terveks eluks, mõjutades üksteise muusikalist arengut.
